What is Lingzhi (Ganoderma lucidum) and does it have side effects?
Firstly, Lingzhi (or Reishi) is the Chinese name given to a particular medicinal mushroom. You may have heard of Ganoderma Lucidum?
Well it is the same thing however in China, Ganoderma is called Lingzhi.
Lingzhi is a woody mushroom highly regarded in traditional medicine and is widely consumed in the belief that it..
- Promotes health and longevity
- Lowers the risk of cancer and heart disease
- Boosts the immune system.
Many studies on the health benefits of Lingzhi in humans have been conducted however studies of possible side effects or toxicity were not as widely available. That is why the Hong Kong Polytechnic University conducted such a test to prove the usability of this mushroom.
The test investigated the effects of Lingzhi supplements over a 4 week period on participants aged 22-52 years. the tests were to observe and record effects including..
- The antioxidant effects
- Effects on DNA changes if any
- Immune system changes
- Presence of Inflammation
- Liver toxicity if any
This test was a follow-up to a similar study that showed that antioxidant power in the blood increased after Lingzhi supplements had been consumed. Other benefits were also highlighted.
In the present study, half the participants were given Lingzhi supplements and the other half were given a placebo. Those given placebo showed no changes whilst those who consumed lingzi showed a trend toward lower lipids, and increased antioxidant capacity.
The results showed no evidence of liver, renal or DNA toxicity with Lingzhi intake, and this is reassuring.
The present study of the effects in healthy, well-nourished subjects provides useful, new scientific data that in conclusion consuming Lingzhi (Ganoderma) showed no unwanted side effects.
